Jokers' Masquerade skeletons demolishing the World Record!

Victory cries rang out through the valleys of South Wales last night as a new Guinness World record was set by fancy dress supremo, Jokers' Masquerade. With the help of Swansea University students, Jokers' Masquerade has broken the previous record for the largest gathering of skeletons, ever!

At 11.30pm on Saturday 8th October, Jokers' Masquerade became the new holder of the Guinness World Record for the largest gathering of skeletons with a staggering 2018, obliterating the previous record of 197, set by The Paul O'Grady Show in 2009.

The event was held at Swansea University Students Union, with entertainment provided by international rock band, Wheatus, and Radio 1 DJ, Matt Edmondson, and Jokers' Masquerade supplied all students with scary skeleton costumes to provide an optical delight!

Jokers' Masquerade is the holder of the Guinness World Record for the largest gathering of Smurfs, and the total of 2,510 remains unbeaten to this day! Donna Houguez, Marketing Manager, explains: “Jokers' Masquerade thought it would be a great idea to replicate our previous world record success using Halloween costumes from this very topical time of year. As Jokers' Masquerade is a fancy dress company, we like to have a bit of fun and thought a room full of 2,000 dancing skeletons would make for a fantastic sight. Dr Melvin Cohen, oil, 40" x 30"

Portrait painter Chris Saper was invited to share the stage Thursday night with physician and hospital leaders in honoring Dr Mel Cohen's service to Phoenix Children's Hospital. As the hospital's first and only Director of Medical Education, Dr Cohen has been a major influence in the conception and development of the Hospital's residency program, which has trained more than 400 residents.

"I've known and loved Dr and Mrs Cohen for almost thirty years," said Saper, "since the inception of Phoenix Children's Hospital in 1983. Not only was he an extraordinary clinician and medical educator, he was truly a gentleman."

The portrait is a composite of many aspects of Dr Cohen's life, created as a collaboration between family members and myself. It includes Mel's favorite paisley tie, the flag pin and the pearl tie tack he wore every day. He holds his medical school yearbook, the Hippocratean from 1954; one of the things I learned about Mel during the process was that he was an artist himself, creating the woodcut and pen and ink drawings that pepper the yearbook pages. On the shelf behind him is a clock given to him by Phoenix Children's Hospital is recognition of his extraordinary service. An avid builder and flier of large remote controlled airplanes, the replica included on the shelf next to him was one of his favorites, a US Navy aircraft. The chair in which Dr Cohen sits was given to him by the medical education program he founded, and is handmade of three different types of wood.

Dr Cohen was the first pediatric kidney specialist in the Valley. He started the first pediatric kidney transplant program in Arizona, and later, founded the Department of Nephrology at Phoenix Children's Hospital. He helped develop that program into the largest pediatric nephrology treatment center in the Southwest, which provides more than 90 percent of the pediatric kidney transplants, hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis in the region.

Dr Cohen passes away on September 4th 2011.

Portrait artist Chris Saper has delivered almost 400 commissioned portrait to clients nationwide since beginning her portrait painting practice some 22 years ago. Prior to painting portraits, she served as a health care executive in several organizations in Phoenix, and worked on the Phoenix Children's Hospital project for thirteen years.

About the Author

Christine Laker was born on April 17, 1979 in Oak Park, IL, a suburb of Chicago. She later moved to a suburb outside of St. Louis, where she currently resides. She is a single mother of two young children. She previously studied Social Work at Quincy University, where she graduated in 2002. She later went on to work with persons with Autism and Autism spectrum disorders. She currently works in the field of mental health, providing symptom management skills, psychosocial rehabilitation and recovery tools for adults afflicted with chronic and severe mental illness, many of whom were previously plagued by alcohol and drug addiction. She strives to instill hope in individuals who at one point had no hope. She teaches others to seek knowledge from a once destructive and broken past, in the hopes that emotional healing is possible. It is her future plan to pursue Psychology and Criminal Justice. Laker began writing at a very young age and someday aspires to publish children’s books. She is a supporter and advocate for women’s rights, disability awareness, racial and cultural equality and ending the stigma surrounding mental illness. She is a promoter of peace and an anti-war advocate. She also strives to promote social awareness and self-esteem in young girls and women.
